It is theoretically capable of quantifying not only the statistical information but also the spatial information of a data set. First, as previously mentioned, Boltzmann entropy is the ideal, standard measure of disorder or information. There are two advantages of employing Boltzmann entropy. Rather than further improving Shannon entropy, this study introduces a novel strategy, namely shifting back from Shannon entropy to Boltzmann entropy. Therefore, considerable efforts have been made to improve the suitability of Shannon entropy for spatial data, and a number of improved Shannon entropies have been put forward. The spatial information is ignored by Shannon entropy for example, a grey image and its corresponding error image share the same Shannon entropy. However, only the statistical information of spatial data can be quantified by using Shannon entropy. It has been widely utilized to quantify the information content of geographic data (or spatial data) in either a vector format (i.e., vector data) or a raster format (i.e., raster data). This entropy has served as the cornerstone of information theory and was introduced to various fields including chemistry, biology, and geography. The quantification result was interpreted as the information content of a telegraph message, hence also the term information entropy. Shannon entropy was proposed to quantify the statistical disorder of telegraph messages in the area of communications. In practice, the widely used entropy is actually proposed by the American mathematician, electrical engineer, and cryptographer Claude Elwood Shannon in 1948, hence the term Shannon entropy. As a result, this entropy (also referred to as Boltzmann entropy and thermodynamic entropy) has remained largely at a conceptual level. As noted by the American sociologist Kenneth Bailey, “when the notion of entropy is extended beyond physics, researchers may not be certain how to specify and measure the macrostate/microstate relations” (Bailey 2009, 151). In practice, however, the Boltzmann equation involves two problems that are difficult to solve, that is the definition of the macrostate of a system and the determination of the number of possible microstates in the microstate. Its computation can be theoretically performed according to the Boltzmann equation, which was proposed by the Austrian physicist Ludwig Boltzmann in 1872. Accordingly, it has been widely regarded as an ideal measure of disorder. It is the subject of the famous Second Law of Thermodynamics, which states that “the entropy of a closed system increases continuously and irrevocably toward a maximum” (Huettner 1976, 102) or “the disorder in the universe always increases” (Framer and Cook 2013, 21). Entropy is an important concept that originated in thermodynamics.

Using the final percentages for courses, an overall 2-year cumulative percentage was calculated. For individual courses, students’ grades were determined by final percentage that was weighted on exam performance (approximately 90%) and small group or lab activities (10%). Delivery of curricular content was primarily through lectures, with less than 10–20% being problem-based learning, small group, and lab activities depending on individual core classes. The second year focused on pathophysiology of disease organized around organ systems and included pharmacology. Year 1 covered normal anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, and neurosciences. The curriculum during the first 2 years followed a traditional format. At the request of the medical students, part of their annual technology fees were used to obtain 90-day subscriptions to UWorld for every student. The College of Medicine provided a 90-day subscription to UWorld, a question bank containing approximately 2400 practice questions. Students are required to complete the exam before the junior clerkships that begin in July. Our medical students take USMLE Step 1 between May and June following successful completion of their second year. Each class matriculated 132 students for a total sample size of 264. The medical students attended a state-funded, public medical school in the Midwest. Participants in this study were recruited from the medical school classes completing their second year in June of 20. Additionally, we investigated the impact of preparation time and its relationship to USMLE Step 1 performance. We sought to determine the relationship between practice question utilization, practice test utilization, and pre-clinical academic performance in our curriculum with performance on USMLE Step 1 in an effort to provide students with evidenced-based advice for preparation. Unlike other studies focusing on metrics such as undergraduate grade point average or Medical College Admissions Tests, we opted for a predictive model based on medical school performance and commercial study aids. The overall purpose of our study was to identify predictors of performance on USMLE Step 1. Additionally, a study done at Wake Forest showed that a seminar series emphasizing process-oriented preparation was helpful in decreasing the anxiety surrounding the USMLE Step 1 exam. Generally, books and preparatory courses have not been consistently shown to have significant association with higher USMLE Step 1 scores however, a student-initiated preparatory course at the University of Illinois Chicago utilizing reading assignments from First Aid, student run review sessions, and practice questions did demonstrate efficacy in increasing test scores. Previous studies have shown statistically significant relationships between exam preparation with practice questions and USMLE exam performance. Many studies indicated pre-clinical curriculum performance in medical school was strongly correlated with USMLE Step 1 results. Studies have shown that medical students with higher USMLE Step 1 scores are more likely to match into more competitive residencies, such as dermatology, surgical subspecialties, and otolaryngology consistent with NRMP-reported Step 1 score means for matched applicants. In the 2016 National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) survey asking residency directors what factors are considered for granting applicants residency interviews, USMLE Step 1 was cited by 93% of respondents making it the most cited factor. Isaacson also notes that Da Vinci’s understanding of optics enabled him to paint “The Last Supper” and his study of the human body aided him in painting the mysterious smile of the “Mona Lisa.” Walter Isaason points out that, “Because he wrote on multiple topics, his eyes and pen darted across disciplines sensing connections.” He sometimes even went back years later and filled in blank spaces or the margins with knowledge he once was missing.īy filling every inch, Leonardo was forced to see his old ideas over and over again until each page was full, and that gave him the opportunity to make connections between some of his many ideas.ĭa Vinci captured everything in his notebooks, enabling him to see patterns in seemingly disparate fields. His notebooks also included drawings of nature and the human body, draft sketches of work he eventually painted, to-do lists, and books he read. I’ve captured many of the leadership practices I’ve wanted to adopt (or avoid) in my notebooks, which has served as a catalyst for my personal growth, and many of the posts on this blog.īecause paper wasn’t cheap in his day, Leonardo had to fill the entire page with notes. I’ve been able to solve plenty of problems by watching and listening instead of participating. When we take the time to observe and write those observations down, it forces us to gain a better understanding of our environment and of people’s behaviors. He once wrote, “As you go about town, constantly observe, note and consider circumstances and behavior of men as they talk and quarrel or laugh, or come to blows.” If you don’t want to carry your government-issued green notebook everywhere, I recommend purchasing a small 3×5 moleskin notebook that fits in your pocket.ĭa Vinci was very curious, so he watched everything. If we adopt the practice of carrying a notebook, we can quickly capture these thoughts before they are gone. Too often, we come up with great ideas, solutions to problems, or key insights while in the midst of the chaos of our daily lives. He even hung a small notebook from his belt so he would have it with him wherever he went. Da Vinci carried a notebook everywhere so that if a thought, observation, or passage caught him, he could write it down. Today, 7,200 pages have survived, which probably represents less than half what he actually wrote down. Leonardo began the practice of keeping a notebook in the early 1480s and kept at it for more than 30 years. So what can Leonardo’s notebooks teach us about creativity? And it is within his notebooks where those connections were made. Leonardo’s creativity and artistic abilities grew out his talent for making connections across disciplines. And as Walter Isaacson argues in his latest biography, Leonardo da Vinci, his style of creativity is exportable, because we can all learn from and adopt one of his most important practices - keeping a notebook. There is something, however, we should know about his genius: he wasn’t born with it or guided to it through schooling (he didn’t go to one) - he worked for it. Most recently, in November 2017, one of Leonardo’s paintings broke a record, selling at auction for $450 million. The Da Vinci namesake is a part of our modern pop culture as well: The Da Vinci Code dominated the New York Times best seller list, he’s been represented in cartoons, movies, and TV shows, and the episode of Epic Rap Battle about him has had more than 74 million views on YouTube. His 16 th century works “The Last Supper,” “Mona Lisa,” and “Vitruvian Man” are still popular today. When we hear the name Leonardo Da Vinci, the word “genius” immediately comes to mind.
